How the KP number method works
In Krishnamurti Paddhati’s horary (Prashna) system, you think of any whole number from 1 to 249 at the exact moment your question is genuinely on your mind. That number fixes an Ascendant longitude, which seeds a full chart cast for that instant — judged exactly like any other horary chart, by checking the Ascendant’s cuspal sub-lord against the houses your question depends on.
Why 249, not 243 or 250: the 243 sub-lord divisions of the zodiac (see the KP Sub Lord Table) are overlaid with the 12 sign boundaries. A sub-division that straddles a sign cusp is split into two numbered segments sharing the same star/sub lord but sitting in different signs — which is how 243 becomes 249.
FAQ
What does a KP horary number mean?
Each of the 249 horary numbers marks one segment of the zodiac, defined by its own unique sign, nakshatra, star lord and sub lord combination. In KP's number method, the number you think of at the moment your question is on your mind fixes the Ascendant for a chart cast for that instant, which is then judged exactly like a regular horary chart.
Why are there 249 numbers and not 248 or 250?
249 is the count of distinct segments produced when the 243 sub-lord divisions of the zodiac are overlaid with the 12 sign boundaries -- a sub-division that straddles a sign cusp is split into two numbered segments, which is why 243 becomes 249.
How do I pick a horary number?
Classically, you think of any whole number from 1 to 249 at the exact moment your question is genuinely on your mind -- not in advance, and not by deliberately choosing one you think suits the question.
Is this the same as casting a horary chart?
This table only shows what each number means. Use “Ask” on any row, or go to the horary page directly, to get an actual Promised or Denied verdict for your question.
What is the KP horary number table 1 to 249?
It lists all 249 horary numbers in zodiac order, each with the sign, nakshatra, star lord and sub lord of the zodiac segment it stands for. Every number has one fixed position, so the table works as a lookup for any number you have in mind.
How is a KP horary chart cast from a number?
The number you think of fixes the Ascendant longitude. A full chart is then cast for the moment of the question and judged like any other horary chart, by checking the Ascendant’s cuspal sub-lord against the houses the question depends on. The horary page does this for you.
